We help used-car buyers ask better questions

Vehicle History Guide is an independent educational website for people in the United States who are about to spend real money on a used car — and want to know what they’re actually buying.

Why this site exists

The used-car lot rewards the prepared

Most buyers spend more time choosing a phone than checking the past of a $15,000 car. Yet a vehicle’s history — reported accidents, title brands, odometer readings, recalls, theft, flood or salvage records — is often sitting in databases, attached to its 17-character VIN.

We built Vehicle History Guide to close that gap: clear explanations of what a vehicle history report may show, where to find a VIN, and the checks worth doing before you sign anything. When you’re ready, our links take you to a report provider where you can run the search yourself.

We are an independent affiliate website. If you buy a report through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That relationship never changes what we write — including our repeated advice that no report replaces a mechanical inspection.

What we do

  • Explain what vehicle history reports can and can’t show, in plain English
  • Show you where to find a VIN and how to verify it matches the paperwork
  • Publish checklists and guides written for U.S. used-car buyers
  • Link you to a report provider where you can run a VIN search yourself

What we don’t do

  • We never collect, store, or look up VIN numbers on this website
  • We never process payments or ask for your card details
  • We don’t sell cars, and we don’t inspect them either
  • We don’t claim a report replaces an independent mechanical inspection

Ready to check a car’s past?

Grab the 17-character VIN and run a search with our partner. Reports may not contain every record — pair yours with an independent inspection.
